In a Historic Vote Boulder County Workers Win Union Recognition
Boulder, Colo.- Boulder County employees won union recognition today, becoming the largest group to do so since county workers won collective bargaining rights with the passage of SB22-230 in 2022. The 1,419 workers overwhelmingly voted 442-221 in favor of joining the Boulder County Employees Union - Communications Workers of America (BCEU - CWA).
This recognition represents a milestone in Colorado’s history and a major step forward for these employees, who aim to strengthen workplace fairness, improve wages and benefits, and ensure the best possible service for the public.
“This has been years in the making, and we’re so proud of what we’ve accomplished,” said Brianna Barber, a Boulder County employee and union leader. “We’re excited to begin bargaining with county leadership to improve working conditions and support the vital services we provide to our community.”
Martha Lugo, another county employee and union leader, shared her perspective: “As a woman of color, I am especially looking forward to the protections our union will bring for workers throughout the county. When public workers are supported, the entire community benefits.”
This milestone comes at a critical time, as Boulder County navigates budget constraints and increasing demands for public services. The union will play a key role in advocating for sustainable resources to support workers and the community alike.
“Our union election victory shows the power of workers uniting to create systemic change,” said Donaven Smith, a Boulder County employee and union leader.
The workers hope to negotiate a fair and equitable contract that prioritizes wages, benefits, and working conditions. They also hope to create transparent communication channels between workers and county leadership to foster collaboration and strengthen partnerships between BCEU, the county, and the broader community.
